The House of Pain is the name given to the Saline Recreation Center by athletes participating in Dr. Ping’s workouts around 1982. Located in Saline Michigan, just 30 minutes from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, the House of Pain is the main facility used by Dr. Ping’s twenty or so athletes in May of every year. They combine martial arts training with weightlifting and running six day a week in preparation for the upcoming NFL season.
Robert Lyles liked the “House of Pain” name so much he took it with him to Houston. His teamates on the Oilers liked the named so much the Astodome started using it for nickname of the stadium.
The Saline Recreation Center has much to offer athletes in training: a full gymnasium, olympic size pool, hand ball court, martial arts room, free weights room, and a separate room with sationary training equipment.
